![]() Much later on you can find Detritus a second time in a very remote part of the Deep Caverns, twisted into the form of a Tchortling just like the other monsters that skulk the blackened streets of Hollow Earth. At first I shrugged and just assumed that he would be taken down for further study. Upon talking to him he mentions that hes going to be taken down into the Deep Caves. Its very brief, but Detritus is a very respectful and kind individual just looking for answers and thinks the Tchortists might have them.Īfter some time passes you can find Detritus standing in the lobby of the Institute. For those of you who haven't done it, its just a little bit of back tracking and he's eventually accepted into the Institute. This quest was one of the few things I didn't have spoiled for me in my hundreds of hours. You end up finding humble Detritus outside of the Institute's gates, a Drop Zoner and sole surviving child of his family who were all wiped out by a plague that swept through his community. The quest when you have to find a subject for the Institute that was resistant to disease. I bring all this up because all of this information would have hit like an absolute truck had I had the chance to just find it all out on my own. From the Oculus, to Ezra's true identity, to Tchort's true nature, all of it. Through looking just for answers or hints to a few simple quests I had everything in this game spoiled for me. And when you have a single player game with a story structured around a deep (and admittedly extremely well thought out) mystery, lore, characters with ulterior motives who take on new identities (Lookin' at you, Ezra), the LAST places you want to send them to figure things out is the Wiki or forum posts. Most players (myself included, after enough time and frustration) will eventually learn after the first time they encounter a quest that they can't possibly be expected to reasonably figure out will just resort to surfing the wiki or forum posts for answers. I know this game prides itself on not being the hand holding type, but there is a very stark difference between giving the player enough info to figure things out and saying "Idk, you do it, stupid." with not enough information. The real problem that i've seen with this game time and time again is the quest structure and the bread crumb trails in quests. I have never seen such an amazingly fun game take a sharp nose dive in enjoyability quite so hard and it truly encapsulates the biggest problem i've had with this game: the quest design. What the fuck happened with the Deep Caverns? I only have one real question to ask here. ![]() I, of course, knew that it was a point of no return because I had that spoiled for me, which I will touch on. Alright, after hundreds of hours in this game, restarting and having a ton of fun with all different play styles from tin can builds to stealth archers to cave wizards to war hammer wielding brawlers, I finally felt satisfied and traveled to the deep caverns. ![]()
